Pellet stove accessories: what do you really need?

An outdoor pellet stove makes a terrace instantly more inviting. After a few evenings, though, most owners notice the same thing: the difference between "nice" and "outside every night" is rarely the stove itself. It is the pellet stove accessories around it. Faster lighting, less mess, clear glass and a floor that stays unmarked.

Lighting: firelighters and a gas torch

Lighting is the most common question we get. The fastest and safest method combines wood wool firelighters with a gas torch. Place one or two firelighters on top of the pellets, light them with the torch and put the glass back. The stove does the rest.

Wood wool firelighters burn evenly, need no liquids and do not spit. A gas torch lets you light them from a safe distance instead of reaching over the opening with a match. Never use methylated spirits or any other flammable liquid: the flame becomes unpredictable.

Step by step

1. Fill the pellet hopper with dry pellets.
2. Place one or two firelighters on top.
3. Light them with the gas torch.
4. Put the glass back as soon as they burn well.
5. Let the stove come up to temperature, then adjust the air supply.

Pellets: quality decides the flame

No accessory affects the result as much as the pellets themselves. Clean, dry wood pellets burn virtually smoke-free and leave little ash. Damp or low-grade pellets do the opposite: less flame, more smoke, more ash and glass that clouds faster.

• Choose clean wood pellets without additives. A standard such as ENplus sets out the quality requirements pellets should meet.
• Store them dry. Pellets absorb moisture from the air; a closed bag in a dry room is enough.
• Buy practical quantities. 15 kg bags are easy to handle and to keep dry.
• Do not overfill. Refill twice rather than filling the hopper too high, and the flame stays stable.

Protecting your floor with a heat-resistant mat

An outdoor pellet stove also radiates heat downwards, and the odd ash flake can fall beside it. On tiles you barely notice; on wood, composite decking, artificial grass or light-coloured boards you do. That is why a heat-resistant mat (50 cm) is the accessory we recommend most often with a new stove. It sits underneath and catches heat, ash and sparks.

It is also handy for rentals and shared terraces: it marks where the stove stands and keeps the rest of the floor clean. Always place the stove on a stable, level surface, with clear space around it and never under flammable planting or a closed roof.

After burning: cover it and store it dry

Your stove is built to stand outside. Even so, we recommend storing it dry after use, for example in a shed or under a canopy. Staying outside? Then cover it properly with a protective cover once it has fully cooled down. That keeps rain and dirt out of the pellet hopper and the paint looking good for longer.

Two rules: never cover a warm stove, and never pour water in to cool it down faster.

Maintenance: ash, glass and paint

Removing ash

After a few evenings ash builds up in the hopper. A compact ash vacuum is the cleanest way to remove it, with no dust cloud. Only do this when the stove is completely cold, and only discard ash when you are certain there are no embers left.

Cleaning the glass

A light film on the glass is normal. With a cleaning kit the glass and soot come off in a few minutes so the flame is clearly visible again. If the glass cracks, you replace only the glass cylinder, not the whole stove.

Touching up the paint

Weather and heat ask something of the coating over time. A 400 ml can of heat-resistant spray paint lets you touch up small chips. Work on a clean, dry and cold stove and apply thin layers.

Safety: four points we always repeat

Accessories do not just make use more pleasant, they make it safer. Four points we mention every time:

• Clear space around it. Do not place the stove against a fence, reed screen or garden cushions. Leave space on all sides and above.
• Stable surface. A level slab, or a heat-resistant mat on decking, works well. Sand, loose gravel or a sloping surface does not.
• Outdoors only. An outdoor pellet stove belongs in the open air or under an open canopy, never in an enclosed room, tent or garage.
• Never leave it unattended. Let the stove burn out and cool down, and only move it when it is cold.

Why does my glass cloud up so quickly?

Usually damp or low-grade pellets, or an air supply that is closed too far. Burn dry, clean pellets and clean the glass now and then.
